Done.

Dublin's People: Canon 7d 24p from Philip Bloom on Vimeo.

So I haven't posted in a while.
I am finally finished schooling and on to bigger and better things.
Who knows where life will take me next. I ran into this clip and somehow
I felt it suited the feeling this juncture of life has left me with.

P.S. The song is 'Whisky in the Jar' by Thin Lizzy

Augmented Reality

This demonstration is both compelling and scary all at once. It reminds me
of science fiction conceptions of the future. This demonstration illustrates
Layar, a new software which utilizes your mobile phones GPS and camera.
It overlays data on housing, banks and bars. I've a feeling that this is just
the tip of the iceberg for this kind of 'augmented reality'.

The future is now!

The Last Guardian is the sequel to the critically acclaimed Shadow of the Colossus Playstation 2 title. Having played Shadow extensively, I can say that it is one of the most unique and engrossing video games I have experienced. I can't wait to play this game, check out the trailer.

Hot Chip - Ready For the Floor

Creating infectious and quirky dance/folk/pop is Hot Chip's bread and butter. The video for their single 'Ready for the floor' is one of the most interesting video's I've seen in a while. Reminds me of Daft Punk's Around the World video.Enjoy.

Kid Icarus

Not unlike many human beings, Ueli Gegenschatz experiences a natural fascination with flight. Unlike many of us though, Ueli sails through the heavens of a regular basis. Not content with the otherwise fantastic pursuits of skydiving, base jumping or sky-boarding alone, he has begun skydiving wearing flight suits. Think of a flying squirrel, it's basically the same idea applied to humans. The suits drastically reduce free fall speed and allow much more 'flight' than skydiving. Spectacular footage of his jumps/flights begins at about 5:48.

Unreal. How do people get jobs/lives like this?

Theo Jansen

Theo Jansen is a Dutch artist, who originally studied physics in University but then pursued an artistic career. Since 1990 Theo has been working on creating new forms of life, 'anima' he calls them. These kinetic sculptures have evolved over the past 19 years with basic logic, mobility and defense systems. Eventually Theo would like to release these creatures into the wild to fend for themselves. A great variety of anima have been created by him and a selection are shown in the embeded vido. You may have seen Jansen in a commercial for BMW stating "The walls between art and engineering exist only in our minds." I couldn't agree more.

Escape From City 17

Escape From City 17 is a short film created by the Purchase Brothers, two Canadian film makers from Toronto. The film is set in the Half Life 2 world of City 17 and follows two resistance fighters as they try to flee the city. The film will make a lot more sense to those of you who've played half life 2 but even if you haven't it's still quite interesting. The level of detail and quality of shots these guys pulled off on a budget of $500 and presumably a lot of blood, sweat and tears is quite stunning. Acting is a bit understated at times but regardless it is a very impressive effort.

Also, this is only part one. I've embedded the low definition version of the film so that everyone can watch but if you have a decently new computer, the menu should allow you to stream a hi-def version of the clip.

Educate Yourself

While I won't pretend like I have any semblance of a true understanding of all the complexity that is the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, I've been trying to shore up my knowledge in the last while and found some useful links. I feel these first two link cover some basic facts that need to be common knowledge for anyone discussing this conflict. The last piece is an opinion piece in which the author asserts the futility of this current surge by Israel to try and re-assert itself after loosing face in the 2006 Lebanon conflict with Hezbollah. This sentiment has been expressed by many others. The message here is, educate thyself, 'cause knowledge is power!

Fighting to Preserve a Myth

Once again, Boston.com's amazing online photo Gallery The Big Picture has stunning photos from the associated press with regard to this current iteration of the conflict.
